Joan G. Brown was a local artist, writer and art teacher who lived in Allington near Maidstone, Kent. She held the National Design Diploma and the Art Teachers' Certificate and taught children from Primary School age to sixteen and adults at the Adult Education Centre, Maidstone and the Malling School Evening Centre. As a member of Rochester and West Kent Art Society, she exhibited her work in Gillingham and Strood Libraries, Chatham Dockyard, and for a number of years at Broadstairs Dickens Festival with 3 other artists. In June 1997 she had her own exhibition entitled "Kent Scenes" at the Kent Potters Gallery in Maidstone and with Ann Brooker at Allington Library. Her pictures were also displayed in a number of shops including the Elizabethan Tea Rooms in Canterbury and many craft centres.

In March 2006 Joan exhibited her painting "Three Wise Cats" at the Gillingham Centre which was sold and in July 2006 she exhibited 2 paintings in the Maidstone Art Society Annual Exhibition called "Riverside Park, Chatham" and "Bodiam Castle".

Joan had many interests in life. She loved to travel the world with her husband Ray where she would often paint the scenes she saw and whilst there visited many world famous art galleries and landmarks. She loved gardening and enjoyed the beauty of nature.

She was also a keen member of the Maidstone Writers Guild and an accomplished writer who had poems and historical articles published, most notably in the Bygone Kent magazine. She was also a strong supporter of the local church, St Nicholas in Allington where she was the enrolling member of the Mothers Union for many years.
